mission narrativemission no. 3date - february 24, 1944 target - schweinfurt the 457th put up only eighteen planes for this mission. the target was the ball bearing plant that had been bombed several times before. the group encountered both heavy flak and fighters. the eighth lost a total of 49 planes on this mission and the 457th lost one. on this mission to schweinfurt, one plane was lost. plane s/n 42-38060 was hit by flak over the target. the plane, piloted by lt. max morrow, lost two engines. sgt italo stella was killed in the air by shrapnel that pierced his flak vest and lt mcintyre was badly wounded. lt morrow decided to crash land his plane in germany to get aid for the wounded. they crash landed the plane and and were taken prisoner. lt mcintyre later died of his wounds. |
