Historian – 457th Bomb Group
This morning, March 10th, 2000, the 457th Bomb Group Association lost one of its earliest and best-loved members. Bernie Baines died today in a hospital in Cambridge, England.
Many of us knew Bernie only by his familiar name. A few of us were privileged to know him and Sadie on a personal level for many years. All members of the Association know what Bernie and Sadie have done during the last half of this century to preserve the memory of those who gave their lives with our Bomb Group.
Bernie was a native of England who lived most of his life in Peterborough. Since WWII he had amassed a huge archive of information and photos of the war days at Glatton and had hosted the mini reunions that have been held every other year in Britian. His visit to the reunion at Gettysburg in 1999 will be remembered by all who attended. He was, officially, the Historian of the 457th Bomb Group.
We send our condolences to Sadie, his wife for over 50 years, and to his children and family. He will be missed by all who knew him.
