B-17 ‘Texas Raiders’

On November 12th 2022, during the Wings over Dallas Airshow, the B-17 Texas Raiders and a P-63 Kingcobra were involved in a mid-air collision.
A ‘bomber parade’ and ‘fighter escort’ demonstration was sceduled in afternoon when, at around 1:20, it all went horribly wrong. The B-17 was flying
a straight line when the P-63 appeared from the left and slammed into the B-17 mid-section cutting the B-17 in half. Both planes went down and huge
fireball was seen when they crashed into the ground. Both planes were owned by the Commemorative Air Force.

The NTSB is now doing an investigation. We know more about the cause of the accident when they finish their report.

Our thoughts go out to the families of those who died in this horrific crash!

Trisha Mach Robertson

It is with great sadness to let you know that, on September 29th 2022, Trisha Mach Robertson, passed away after a years-long battle with cancer. Trisha was the proud daughter of 457th BG veteran Bill Mach and a years long board member of the 457th BG Association. Her three daughters, Nicole, Rebecca, and Heather and her husband, Gregg were all with her as she passed.

Lt. Vaughn Dale Heidenreich

Lt. Vaughn Dale Heidenreich, 98, passed away September 30, 2022 from complications of Covid. He passed peacefully into his Lord’s arms at his home in Woodstock, surrounded by his loving wife and family.

Vaughn was born September 21, 1924 in Stockton, Illinois to Lester Ollie and Amy (Bourne) Heidenreich. His parents and their five boys moved to Crystal Lake, Illinois where he graduated from Crystal Lake High School in 1942. In 1943 at age 19, he answered our nation’s call to serve in World War II and joined the United States Army Air Forces. He came up through the ranks quickly to ultimately become a decorated 1st Lieutenant and lead bombardier in a B-17 Flying Fortress. He was in the 457th Bombardment Group of the “Mighty” 8th Air Force stationed in England. Vaughn flew 22 perilous, successful combat missions over Nazi occupied Europe. He left the service in 1945 at the end of the war and returned to his relieved parents’ home in Crystal Lake. All of the Heidenreich boys served our country and miraculously came home.

He was a die hard Cubs and Bears fan, living long enough to see the Bears take the Super Bowl in 1986 and the Cubbies finally take the World Series in 2016.

In 2011 Vaughn was honored to be asked to be the keynote speaker at the Veterans Day Recognition program held at McHenry County College, Illinois. There he recounted, to a rapt and grateful audience, his time overseas, his missions and emotional memories of the war. The date was 11/11/11.

If you knew Vaughn, even for a short time, you knew he had a sharp sense of humor like no other. Witty, quick, with an endless supply of moan-worthy dad jokes and other “punny” stuff. Even as he began to fade from us, he joked with nurses and doctors. Never missing a beat.

He lived a full, rich, blessed and long life, and still was taken too soon from us. As he left, he repeatedly reassured everyone around him, “I love you.”

Rest now, Sir. Fait accompli.

Services to be announced.

Eric Brumby

Eric Brumby belonged to the group of English Historians who started it all. We owe him a lot and we will miss him and the stories he had about the men of the 457th Bomb Group. Eric Brumby passed away on October 17th 2020.

Eric Brumby: Bernard Bains and I worked for Perkins Engines in Peterborough. Bernard was a member of the local military society, I was not… I loved airplanes and visited the local library to find aviation books to borrow. It was there that I first saw The Book FLACK DODGER so I borrowed it ..and was enthralled. Having read the book and its poignant chapter about the Stone American at The Church I was sad that the monument was neglected and in disrepair so on my day off from work I made a visit and found the Memorial. I cut the grass and put some flowers there. I thought about all those very young men who never went home which struck a cord with me because my own Father had served in the War and never came home, he too had no known grave so in a way it comforted me to know that these poor boys parents/offspring were in the same situation as I. After the first visit I returned once a week to keep the monument tidy and put flowers out. So at work ond day I saw Bernard Bains and as a military man we had a conversation which oddly enough came around to ” Yanks”! It was then that we came to the local bomb group. Bernard knew about them and told me about the group and the monument It was THEN that he said SOMEONE! is looking after the Stone American to which I replied ” ITS ME “! Well That was a surprise to him I tell you he then told me all he could about forming English Historians. So of course I joined with him and we also had John Wilson and Johnny Walker that made 4 of us. I know there are many guys who say that they did this and that and the old local gent who had by then become ill also. There are mixed stories inevitably of course but we 4 were the basis of the English Historians. Bernard was our Anchor, we never ever saw Wilson, Johhny Walker was the real Historian and there was nothing he did not know about the 457th as for me well I just got along with whatever I was asked to do. I was more interested in the Public Relations etc. One of my Star Events was getting the Mayors Parlour Gig set up where we used to go and meet the Mayor in his Parlour and have coffee and a guided tour of the Civic side of things. I think all in all we did a great job for the boys and Families who we greeted back to the UK, and finaly, it gave me somewhere to mourn my Dear Dad who also had no know grave.

James Bass

Obituary for James L. Bass

Funeral Services for Smith County, TN, native James Lillard Bass, Jr, will be held at 2PM on Sunday, May 24, 2020 at the Carthage Chapel of Bass Funeral Homes, conducted by Rev. Jerry Wallace and Rev. Monica Mowdy with eulogy delivered by his daughter, Jane Bass Turner. Burial will follow in the Gordonsville Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be at the Carthage Chapel of Bass Funeral Home on Saturday from 3PM until 8PM and on Sunday from 10AM until service time at 2PM. Mr. Bass passed away on Thursday, May 21, 2020, two weeks before his 99th birthday. He was 98 years of age.

A son of the late J.L. and Linnie Gibbs Bass, he received his early education in the Smith County School system graduating from Gordonsville High School in 1939. He enrolled in Cumberland University to continue his education which was interrupted by America’s entry into World War II. While at Cumberland University he helped pay his tuition by waiting (hopping) tables in the university’s dining room.

During World War II he served as a radio operator and aerial gunner on a heavy bomber assigned to the U.S. Army Air Crops stationed with the 8th Air Force in Conington, England with the 457th Bomb Group. In preparation for his assignment he went through basic training by what he called was the toughest drill sergeant in the Army. He then took an extensive course in radio operation and maintenance and procedure at an army facility in Sioux Falls, SD. It was here he learned the International Morse Code. Aerial Gunnery school followed in Yuma, AZ. In combat he participated in the Battle of the Bulge, the Rhineland Offensive, and the Central Europe Campaign. For his service he was awarded the European, African, and Middle East Campaign Medal with battle stars, the Air Medal with clusters, the Victory Medal, and the French Foreign Legion Medal of Honor, the highest honor bestowed by the French Government for his role in liberating French POW’s. Concerning his service in the Armed Forces he said “I was proud to have served. I was aware that I was part of a larger effort that would have a lasting impact on the world. If we had not stepped up when we did and Hitler had been successful, we would be living in a very different world at this time.”

After the conclusion of the war he continued his education with an undergraduate degree from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville in 1947. He entered law school at Vanderbilt University and graduated in 1949, beginning a long career in law. He remained active until May 8, 2020.

Mr. Bass was instrumental in the formation and development of the Smith Utility District. Funds for the formation and development of public works projects were scarce in the early 1960’s; however he looked for and found a favorable source of financing to start the project. He has looked with pride with the development of the District and provided legal services to the district for more than 50 years. He was also active in helping secure funds for rural telephone systems to bring modern telephone service to rural areas and served as legal counsel for more than 50 years to a trade association, NTCA, whose membership consisted of rural telephone systems located all across the nation. He served on the Smith County Industrial Board, and prepared the Articles of Incorporation and bylaws of the Industrial Board, the Smith County Chamber of Commerce, and the Smith County Heritage Museum. He was a longtime member of the Carthage United Methodist Church where he taught adult Sunday School Class for a number of years and was active at all levels of the Methodist Church.

He is the author of a historical account of the 457th Bomb Group and a history of the rural telephone program. He was also a licensed funeral director in the State of Tennessee and at the time of his death was the oldest licensed funeral director in the state.

The family requests memorials be made to the Carthage United Methodist Church Memorial Fund or a charity of your choice.

NEW WEBSITE LAUNCHED

At the end of 2018 we started looking at the website. The platform was kind of old and with the future plans we had we needed a platform that could meet our plans.

Because I live in the Netherlands I contacted an old colleque of mine and asked him if he could help. He said yes and because he loves what we do he told us straight from the start that he would help us for free.

We looked at other websites, wishes and future wishes and he, Sjaak Glasbergen, started building. Beginning of 2019 read more

THE DUANE ZEMPER FILM

This video presents films of the 457th Bomb Group. These films were taken by members of the photo intelligence unit attached to the 457th, commanded by Lt. Duane L. Zemper. The films were brought home with him when he returned after the war. They have been digitized and edited by his son, Eric D. Zemper, PhD.

Because these films were taken by Lt. Zemper and the men in his photo section, around the base and during bombing missions, it should not be surprising read more
