The 457th bomb group Association went to England on an excursion, although it felt like a reunion.
We had a good group of 18 members join us and the whole trip was organized by Tim and Angie Newell who did an excellent job!
On Thursday and Friday we had the time to go and do some sightseeing. On Thursday night we watched some slides with photos of our group brought to us by Dale McKean. A small group visited the old bomb store area on Friday made possible by David Hobbs and later a small group went on a sightseeing tour around the old base.
On Saturday we visited the Duxford Imperial War Museum which also had an Air Show that day.
Sunday we had our memorial at the water tower monument. Many people attended the ceremony and we had a few jeeps and truck showing up too, one jeep had the 457th Bomb Group painted on the bumper. After the water tower we visited the church and stone airman, Conington Airfield and finished with some refreshments at the Admiral Wells pub. We met some great English friends and we hope these friendships will remain for many more years to come! That evening we had our farewell dinner at the Talbot Hotel. During the dinner Becky Bonner received some fragments of her grandfather’s plane which crashed in the Swiss Alps.
On Monday we visited the Memorial Day Service at Madingly American Cemetery. A very nice en respectful ceremony. Miss Cleo Giachino (niece of Don Charles Osborne, 748th BS) laid our wreath during the wreath laying ceremony.
